The Periyar University was established on 1997 in Salem. It was named after the renowned social activist E.V.Ramasamy also known as Periyar. The university offers post graduate and under graduate degree programs in various fields like Tamil, Journalism and Mass communication, Sociology, Physics, Bio Chemistry, Computer Science, applied Geology, Bio Informatics, Microbiology, Hotel Management and various other courses. The university is also well known for its distance education programs which are offered through PRIDE (Periyar Institute for Distance Education) for various students from the state of Tamilnadu. The university also offers diploma and certificate courses.
