Savitribai Phule Pune University was formerly known as the University of Pune. It is a university in western India in the city of Pune. It was founded in 1948 and now its campus is spread over 411 acres. It was established under the Pune University Act passed by Bombay Legislature. The university has 46 departments for education. NAAC (National Assessment and Accreditation Council) has rated this university as “A” grade for its best performance.
Savitribai Phule was an Indian social reformer and known for her contribution to the empowerment and emancipation of women through education. It has been ranked as the number three University of India. It has affiliated colleges, departments and research institutes located in Pune. The university was renamed as the SP Pune University on 9 November 2014 for showing honour to Savitribai Phule, an Indian social reformer.
